Summary:

Be amongst the team that gets to manufacture Ghirardelli chocolate products, classic and new by leading a team which supports production initiatives to ensure chocolate can be produced for our consumers and reinventing and installing new equipment to manufacture quality chocolate!
A critical role within Operations team and as a leader in the Operations organization, the Director Engineering & Maintenance leads the team of professionals responsible for the designing, installing and maintaining equipment in the San Leandro manufacturing plant and the Lathrop, CA Packaging and Distribution center. In addition the role is responsible for leadership and guidance with respect to environmental, health and safety for the San Leandro facility. The Director Engineering & Maintenance also contributes to global process improvements for Safety and Engineering within the Lindt & Sprungli global network. This role is also responsible for leading, providing direction, developing and enabling a team of talent at all levels in responsible areas.
This position, by ensuring compliance with company policies and procedures, is responsible for recommending, developing, implementing and managing safety, quality and food safety on all product lines.
Scope of Responsibilities:
Engineering
• Leader of Medium Term Investment Planning (MTIP) process to ensure factory development can meet market demands, continuous improvement in cost structure and a safe and effective work environment. Ensures long term plans balance the need for factory development with new product innovation ideas and potential products. Works with key stakeholders in marketing, research and development, quality assurance and finance to ensure business alignment to the MTIP.
• Leader of the Annual Capital Budgeting process based on the MTIP.
• Develops and operates the business process with the engineering and finance teams to ensure capital projects are delivered on time and within budget and scope to ensure sound business decisions are made transparently when new information becomes available.
• Ensures collaboration between engineering, maintenance, production and quality assurance teams on design and handover of new installations to Production Department. Ensures thorough training and documentation of new equipment.
• As needed, guide engineering work by contractors or vendors and ensure commissioned performance of installations. Develop vendors to support long term relationships as appropriate.
Maintenance
• Provide strategic leadership to maintenance department and challenge team and department to transition further to preventative programs and process and equipment improvement.
• Provide oversight and guidance on budget management and allocation.
• Work with vendors to ensure equipment is developed and maintained in a manner capable of delivering peak efficiency and throughput.
• Ensure infrastructure is developed and operating at peak capability.
Security and Safety
• Lead development of safety system and champion safety for production facility.
• Provide oversight and guidance on budget management and allocation.
• Ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations as defined by CalOSHA
• Actively participate in any regulatory visits and inspections with CalOSHA
Department Management
• Ensures proper development of reports through assessing skills levels of direct reports and broader teams and following up with development solutions.
• Provides guidance and direction to direct reports and broader team members, including setting performance expectations and monitoring team performance-ensuring alignment with Ghirardelli\’s leadership expectations.
Utilities Management
• Plan and budget electricity, gas, water and waste water.
• Develop and implement projects for utilities cost and usage reduction.

• Understanding of security requirements of a food production plant and knowledge about Federal food safety regulations (bio terrorism act).
• Food (preferred) or pharmaceutical background required. Chocolate experience desired.
• Ability to work effectively in a Union environment.
• Computer literacy in MS Office and Auto Cad. ERP knowledge is a plus.
Education and Work Experience:
• BA Degree in Engineering or 5 to 10 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 3 to 5 years experience as an Engineering manager in a food plant, preferably chocolate plant.
• Experience leading or participating in building and implementing a lean manufacturing culture
Working Conditions:
• Occasional travel, estimated to be once per month
• Spends 60-70% time standing or walking around in the plant.
• Food manufacturing plant and office environment
• Interfacing with various manufacturing equipment and office computer equipment
• Regular communication with internal and/or external customers
