OVERVIEW
Our client, University of San Francisco (USF) is looking to fill a temp to hire Senior Telecom Engineer position to support the ITS department. Resumes are being reviewed immediately and qualified candidates will be considered.
The Senior Telecom Engineer has general engineering and support responsibility for enterprise telecommunications systems and associated applications. The Senior Telecom Engineer will assist in the design, implementation, engineering and operations for all company telecom and cable television systems. Interfacing with multiple support and product vendors and internal customers, this position will support call center locations and act as tier 3 telecom support as well as lead a small telecom team. This role will be responsible for coordinating installation, operation and monitoring for telecom system equipment, hardware and software as well as assisting in evolving the design of the environments and architectures.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide technical design, planning implementation, documentation, maintenance, security, configuration, support and integration of telephony and contact center telecommunication environments, which includes a complex multi-location and multi-vendor infrastructure.
-Including support of phone switch, voicemail, E-911, RAS, WAN and related systems
• Provide detailed technical information work logs in ServiceNow.
• Leverage an advanced level of knowledge of voice infrastructure components, how they interact and relate to other services and platforms as well as understand how changes will impact customers and the business.
• Proactively monitor health of all telephony systems utilizing all available data to ensure all systems are operational. Quickly initiate action to resolve any high level issues encountered or reported and, once resolved, take necessary steps to prevent recurrence of those issues. This includes but is not limited to:
-Emergency response for telecommunication systems and facilities
-Perform traffic and system reports;
-Report escalation information for system incidents, request, potential communications and network problems to Manager and Director of Client Support Services
• Provide project coordination and management with ITS Project Management Office and applicable divisions within USF.
• Ensure call detail is sent to Pinnacle billing system.
• Work closely with all teams throughout ITS and business departments to ensure initiatives coincide with the overall company vision and service level objectives.
• Maintain technical documentation for designs and configurations.
• Receive, organize, and prioritize and process incoming ServiceNow requests, incidents, and project tasks assignments in a high-pressure environment.
• Provide operational break/fix and maintenance support for requests, incidents and system changes. This will include installation and troubling of cabling. Assist with edge data switch installation and configuration including VLAN assignment as needed.
• Assist in the maintenance and accuracy of the database records for the university cabling infrastructure.
• Coordinate with telecommunications vendors to ensure appropriate platform integration and performance is maintained.
• Manage level 1 cable television support with telecom team.
• Provide level 2 university wide technical support for cable television. Coordinate escalated level 3 service visits with vendors.
• Supervise small team of telecom technicians and student technicians. Coordinate training for student assistants on systems, hand tools and related devices.
• Able to work a flexible schedule when needed, to include overnight, weekends, holidays and/or off hours support and on-call duties.
• Others duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
• 3 – 5 years’ direct experience in telecom engineering or technical support role(s).
• Four year technical degree (or equivalent) preferred.
• In-depth knowledge of telephony standards and systems including voice switching technology, call routing, digital, analog, T1, DS3, PRI, CSU/DSU, ACD, call center, and wiring standards and practices;
• Experience with NEC phone systems, Adtran equipment, Telident E-911, Cisco switches;
• High level advanced voice and cable troubleshooting;
• Project management experience with ability to organize and prioritize multiple complex projects;
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, visual, and written communication skills for technical and non-technical staff;
• High level of customer service;
• Able to work within a team environment with peers and other co-workers;
• Demonstrated ability in inbound and outbound call provisioning and routing, vector programing, skills based routing, and ARS table programming.
• Technical proficiency and understanding of data and voice networking concepts and LAN/WAN topologies to include TCP/IP, Routing and Switching, SIP, QOS, POE, MPLS, VOIP, and SBCs.
• Must possess a high degree of industry-specific skills and comprehension, including telecommunications terminology and equipment types.
• Extensive experience with network providers, circuit provisioning, vendor management, evaluation and relations.
• Manual dexterity with small tools.
• Experience with vendor management, evaluation, RFP and relations;
• Familiarity with academic environment, policies, and procedures;
• Ability to work in confined spaces and lift up to 70 lbs.;
• Some travel to regional campuses, conferences, training seminars, trade and other potential educational/training opportunities;
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience leading small teams preferred.
• 24 x 7 on call rotation on off hours and weekends;
• Able to work off hours and weekends when necessary;
• BS in IT field or equivalent, experience can substitute for field of study
